A llms.txt file is a Markdown file placed at the root of a website (https://your-site.com/llms.txt) that summarizes the site for large language models: one H1 with the site name, a one-sentence blockquote, then H2 sections listing the important pages with a short description each. The specification was proposed in September 2024 by Jeremy Howard (Answer.AI) at llmstxt.org.

What is the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?

llms.txt is a short index: one link and one line of description per page, so a model can decide what to read. llms-full.txt carries the substance of the pages themselves in a single file, for a model that answers without browsing. Both files live at the root of the site.

Is a llms.txt enough to get cited by ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

Accepted Answer

No. The file makes the site easier to read for assistants that fetch it, but citation depends on the content of the pages: direct answers, dated and sourced facts, clear structure, natural style. Google AI Overviews relies on the regular Google index and does not use llms.txt. The file is a zero-cost bet, not a ranking lever.

At the root of the domain, served as text/plain in UTF-8, with llms-full.txt next to it and both mentioned in robots.txt. Regenerate it after every redesign: a llms.txt pointing to dead pages does more harm than no file at all.
